"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Ephesians 2:10 Golden Retrievers need work to do for and with their human companions. You should be training your Golden with a specific purpose in mind. In this way, everyday you spend time with your dog, teaching it skills, shaping behaviors, training it to accomplish tasks that it will use in the "work" you have planned for it to do. That "work" may be a family playmate or companion, an agility competitor, a therapy dog to visit the sick and elderly, a field trial competitor, or a hunting companion.

The Canine Good Citizen Program lays the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events. As you work with your Golden to teach the CGC skills, you’ll discover the many benefits and joys of training your Golden. Training will enhance the bond between you and your Golden. R.E.A.D

The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program improves children’s reading and communication skills by employing a powerful method: reading to a dog. R.E.A.D. dogs are registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handlers as a team, going to schools, libraries and many other settings as reading companions for children. Because of the Golden’s easy going temperament, the R.E.A.D. program is a natural fit. Intermountain Therapy Animals, a non-profit organization, launched R.E.A.D. in 1999 as the first comprehensive literacy program built around the appealing idea of reading to dogs, and the program has been spreading rapidly and happily ever since.

Therapy Dogs

Golden Retrievers are notoriously sweet, affectionate, eager to please, and great with children. Due to their desire to please, intelligence, and capacity for love and learning, Golden Retrievers make great therapy dogs. A therapy dog is a dog which has been specially trained to offer companionship, affection, and comfort. These special canines are brought into hospitals, nursing homes, mental facilities, prisons, schools and disaster areas to provide their unique services to people who might be in need of a friendly face and a connection with an animal. Golden Retrievers excel in this area because of their love and loyalty to people and their calm nature. There are a number of organizations that offer therapy dogs to facilities which request them, along with training and volunteer opportunities for dog owners who would like to use their pets as therapy dogs. Happy Tails and Dreamworkers are such organizations local to the Atlanta, GA area. Therapy Dogs, Incorporated and Delta Society are international and national organizations that offer therapy dog certification.
